Learning Highlights for Room 4A - November 26-30, 2018

Oki,
Another week of metacognitive transformation in room 4A.  Here are some photos to tell our story for this week.

First up, here we are trying out the new dragon boxy step sequence.  This is a great way for students at KTS to reset their brains with a movement break.

In preparation for report cards students are reflecting on their own work in their visual sketch journals.  They had to pick two of their best pages and tell me why they thought this was some of their best work (see the post it notes).  This taps into the growth mindset and setting learning goals for themselves.

Finally, this week we have been using our listening skills to learn from a Blackfoot knowledge keeper.  We can learn from the land by paying attention to when animals arrive and leave from a particular location.  We listened to a video about   Iitao'tsstoyi, When Cold Arrives: the first winter lunar cycle in the Blackfoot calendar

Here is a web of all of the learnings from the video

We decided to explore the word bundle which is an important concept in Blackfoot culture.
Here are some notes about the first four animals that were discussed:  Trumpeter Swan, Tundra Swan, Snow Geese and the Beaver

 Wolf Cap

Speaking of the beaver, on our community walk on Friday morning our focus was to look for evidence of the beavers at the pond.  We were excited to discover the food caches that were discussed in Ryan's video.  More pictures of the walk to follow.

We are learning how to locate ourselves on the land by visualizing our journey.  When we returned to the class, we retraced our steps down to the pond to create maps in our journals.
