The Story of Our Learning in Rm 4A - December 10-14, 2018

Oki,
(this blog is brought to you through collaborative writing.  We brainstormed as a class and Ms. Hargreaves wrote down our ideas.

We would love to transform your thinking by telling you about our thinking this week:

The first learning is about the important stories of the Blackfoot knowledge keepers (animals):
We have been gathering data nuggets about the beaver this week. You will not believe how many connections we made this week.  Here is a picture of our web.  We are going to be using these next week to write a decisive delightful dedicated descriptive paragraph about these elaborate, eco-friendly engineers.  Can you spot the alliteration?

It has been an entire week of research using different sources of information, videos, Epic Books, Student Created Books, Non-fiction Picture books from the library.

We also watched a video created by Randy Heavy Head  called When the Cold arrives (Iitao'tsstoyi).  We are going to be creating a picture of one of the animal stories of land using plasticine next week.  Stay tuned for our next blog post.

In math we are learning all about the multiplication strategies.  For example, when multiply 7's you multiply by 5, and then add a double of the group.  When you multiple by 9's you multiply your group by 10 and the subtract one group.  There is also one called doubles, doubles, doubles for multiplying by 8s.

Here are the strategies we have been learning in class.

On Tuesday we had a special teacher guest Mrs. Vircoe, she came into teach us how to code microbits.  Check out the website and have your child teach you some coding.  Really creative way to show the growth mindset.  https://makecode.microbit.org/

Here are some photos from the day:

Friday,  we worked with our grade 2 buddies to learn about magnetic, magnificent, metacognitive  medicine wheels,  we started our prototype design. Later we will collaboratively create an artistic version of the wheel.
We brainstormed what medicine wheel means and some people came up amazing, artistic ideas:
Peyton said: "I think maybe it's the direction of the wheel tells you where to find the plant (medicine)."
Ashton said:  "maybe its the center of reciprocity"
Armen said:  "maybe it's a spirit wheel that takes away sickness."
Aleksei said:  "maybe it's a place to heal sick Blackfoot people."
Rayan said:  " maybe there is a doctor spirit."

We have been preparing for our Winter Celebration by creating cards for the seniors and trees for the gym.

Check out these amazing trees with recycled material decorations.  What designers we have in room 4A!
