What did we learn about last week? March11-15, 2019

Oki,
Here is a synopsis of our learning from last week:

Literacy:
Our Bison Essays went live as we began writing them in google docs, using our research, quotes and checklist.

Humanities:
Our thinking was transformed on our Glenbow Museum Field trip as we learned more about the stories about the land and people in Alberta

What continued on our journey to discover the stories of the new Central Library:   So many connections to design thinking, biomimicry, stories,  and mindfulness

Do these windows remind you of anything?

Geometric furniture gave us connections to science and wedges and incline planes

Math:

We have been investigating the connections between fractions and decimals in math.

We are also doing a problem of the week to work  on our critical thinking skills for solve math problems.  Here is an example:

Here are some student reflections:
Did you know that decimals are exactly like money? DH
Did you know that you use decimals all the time? CS

Decimals can be converted into fractions, but with smaller numbers. AJ

Did you know that decimals are exactly fractions?

Did you know that for the decimal’s place value you have to add a “ths” for example, tenths, hundredths? SB/SN

Learning from the Land/Collaborating to Create:

We spent some time on Thursday morning with our Grade Two buddies - working on prototype 3 of our medicine wheel. We are now working on creating a collage. Ask me what collage means.

We watched a creation video about how North America got created. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cX4GJTtSigY

We learned about every turtle shell no matter what type of turtle has 13 scutes/sections and that around the edge of the shell there are 28 and when you multiply 28 X 13 = 364 which represents the total number of days in Lunar Calendar (this is the calendar that the indigenous people use). We would like to call this the calendar from the beginning of the world.

Here are some journal reflections about our inquiry in the story of the turtle:

Turtles are one of the most affected species by plastic pollution in the ocean. Some turtle species are endangered because of lights coming from cities. Light pollution.

On Tuesday, March 19th, we are heading back to Simon Fraser to watch their drama production called Lion King Junior. We can't wait to learn the story of the Lion King through drama.
