Marvelous, Mindful, Medicine Monday

Happy Monday,

What a wonderful field trip we had today!!! There is nothing better than learning from nature.  Darcy Turning Robe's stories  along with his amazing singing voice really transformed our thinking about the history of his culture and Nose Hill Park.  We walked 5.6 km up and across the hill, it was a workout through the snow, but everybody persevered.

Here are some photos for you to enjoy the experience too:

On our way up the hill, first sighting of the infamous prairie crocus.  Ask your child to tell you the story of this amazingly adaptive flower.

Thanks to our fabulous volunteers, we couldn't do it without you!

Walking across the park, looking for plants and evidence of wildlife.

Looks like a lupine is popping up here.

Walking through the remaining snow.

Looking down from the top watching the other classes make their ascent.

We are on top and almost at the medicine wheel

We have arrived:  Kieran delivers the acknowledgement of the land.  Thanks Kieran for your amazing reading skills!
Darcy begins sharing his stories.  This is the spot where two scouts would watch over the land to protect the people in the camps down below near Fort Calgary.  They would work together, one sleeping the other awake and then trade off.  As you know you can see for a very great distance from this vantage point.

During our walk about, we discovered another stone structure.  A mindful, meditative labyrinth.  I wonder who created this?  Any thoughts?

Stop, drop and sketch.

Finding our sit spot to listen to the stories of the plants and land.

Mindful listening.

A hitchhiker leaf,  what plant adaptations can you see here.

Writing the story.

Playing nature Bingo

Searching for plant specimens.

Sarah wonders if this is the stick that Napi used on the Black Birch trees.

All classes meet back at the medicine wheel for the closing and to thank Darcy.

The altar is at the center of the wheel, a person can leave and offering here and ask for help and healing or insight.

Shadows fall into this healing circle to give thanks for an amazing day!
