Our Learning in Room 119 for last Week Feb 19-22, 2019

Oki,
Here's a web of our learning from last week.  Again a fun filled exciting week of literacy, collaboration, research, critical thinking and artistic representations.

It is really important to work every day for about 5 minutes on the basic multiplication facts because in grade four we begin explore multiplication and division of 3 digits by 1 and 2 digits.  Here are some links for practicing multiplication at home:  https://www.mathsisfun.com/tables.html

Grand Conversations are part of our literacy cycle and they allow us to use our reading powers to understand the complex and multilayered novels that students are reading.  We read in groups 3 - 4 times per week.  Here is a visual to remind you of the reading powers and how you can use them at home to talk about the books you are reading together:
The students use these reading powers to make entries in their visual sketch journals, again to help them understand how the story and characters transform.

We used the I see, I think, I wonder to zoom into photos of a mystery object connected to our social studies research and writing.  Here are some photos of the object and entries from some visual sketch journals.

Collaboration in artful thinking using Paper 53.  We had an epic experience on Wednesday with our grade 2 buddies and the visiting students from Simon Fraser.  Connected to stories of the land and our social studies research into Alberta's Land and People we decided to create medicine wheels, together.  The energy and ideas were flying around the room. Check out the featured post for more photos.

Then, again on Friday we got together with our grade two buddies to continue our artistic exploration into cycles and circles found in nature that tell us stories.  Here is a photo of the web we brainstormed with them:

Here are some of the finished paintings:
